Why I don’t celebrate Halloween or anything even close to it…

I’m going to start this off by saying first and foremost, this is a personal conviction of mine! It is not my church’s conviction. It is not even my family’s conviction. It is MY personal conviction.

As a child I grew up in a church that participated in Trunk or Treat. We would dress up like Bible characters and go hand out candy to the community that would show up at the church for free candy. Growing up I was always confused about how it was ok to dress up as long as it was a Bible character and it was ok to give out candy, as long as it was at the church but we couldn‘t do it outside of the church.

It left me very confused as a child and I never had personal convictions about it until I got older. I even bought candy one year to hand out because we lived downtown and felt the “disease to please” the crowd and pass out candy, only to turn off all the lights and eat the candy ourselves because conviction set in! I praise God for Holy Ghost conviction.

I love to celebrate! I celebrate people all the time! I celebrate birthdays for a month and it drives my husband crazy! I love to honor people and make them feel important. When it comes to celebrating this holiday, this is where I have to draw the line.

It’s very easy to “go with the flow” and want to participate in this holiday or even put a churchy spin on it but I’m completely against it! Here are a few reasons why:

1-It confuses small minds! It was never the intentions of my grandparents or my church I grew up in to confuse me. There goal and desire was to give kids a safe, godly place to participate. I didn’t see it as that though. As a child it made me think it was ok to act one way with the church and another way with the rest of the world. It put this confusion in me from the time I was little to believe that you act one way at church and another at home. Again, let me emphasize no one taught me this but more is taught than caught in the way we behave. I never want my children to think they can act one way at church and another at home. God’s house IS our home and a place that should be kept for reverence of the Lord and the things of the Lord. The way they are to act at church is the way they are to act at home. We don’t act differently to please a certain people. We are HIS children created in HIS image.

2- I don’t do scary! Church it up all you want and you‘ll still see goblins and ghosts show up. It’s the world. You can’t remove the world from the world. Fear is not of the Lord! There are things we ARE to fear but man is not one of them. I don’t do none of that mess! I actually just saw a halloween commercial and my heart started beating faster and blood started pumping harder. I don’t enjoy being scared and I’m definitely not going to entertain the idea. Daily we are supposed to renew our minds and be more like Christ, I don’t personally believe you can do this and participate in worldly things.

3-It’s my personal conviction- If you’ve made it this far in reading this, you’re not too offended. If you haven’t, I’m sure it’s not your conviction. It is mine however. I’m not willing to bend the convictions for anyone. I have strong convictions about modesty and very strong convictions about what my children watch. My convictions are not yours and yours are not mine. One part of growing Spiritually Mature is understanding that we may not always see eye to eye and that’s ok. It is a choice to be offended friends. It is a choice to allow my convictions to dictate yours and vise versa! I’m not writing this to convict you personally but to share why my convictions are so strong.

I have to give an account for MY behavior and MY children some day and the last thing I want is their blood on my hands. The last thing I want is to participate in anything that causes them confusion. No one else growing up may have saw it as confusing but because it led me astray personally, I am determined to keep the only ghost at my house the Holy Ghost!

I am not speaking against your church either if they participate in anything of this sort either! Mine does! I just don’t participate in it and that’s ok! Church isn’t a one size fits all situation that is why the word of God tells us to work out our own salvation. We all have personal convictions. Each persons testimony is different! Each person handles trials and triumphs differently! Salvation is a one size fits all because there is only one way and that is through the blood of Jesus but Church itself isn’t. You find where you can fit in and serve among a body of believers like minded in faith, not in opinion. Figure out what and why you celebrate what you do. Allow God to dictate your actions not man.

Just like you will not give an account for my children and how they are raised, neither will I for yours. You pass it all by the Word of God and if it passes the test, participate! If it doesn’t, don’t! I love harvest time y’all! Fall is my favorite! I love all things pumpkin but we don’t even carve a pumpkin because I never want my children to be led astray in anyway of thinking momma celebrates Halloween. We celebrate that the Lord has given us seasons like fall and that’s all! 💗

Love in Christ,
